Singing Sand Dunes (Chinese: 鳴沙山) are the sand dunes located in Mogao (莫高) Town, Dunhuang (敦煌) City, Gansu (甘肅) Province, China. When the wind blows, the sands give out a singing or drumming sound.
The best way to travel Singing Sand Dunes is riding a camel, since it is too hot and quite difficult to walk in the desert.
Singing Sand Dunes are part of the Kumtag Desert (庫姆塔格沙漠), which are around 40 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide.
Besides camel riding, there are also some other activities, but they are not cheap, you would be better just enjoy the panoramic view of the desert and Dunhuang.
The Singing Sand Dunes were originally known as the ‘Gods' Sand Dunes’ (神沙山). During the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), they came to be called by the current name.
Dunhuang commands a strategic position at the crossroads of the ancient Southern Silk Route and the main road leading from India via Lhasa to Mongolia and Southern Siberia, and also controls the entrance to the Hexi Corridor (河西走廊).
