Mae Wang (Thai: แม่วาง) is a district in the central part of Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. Mae Wang has been isolated for many years and has been the settlement of Karen (Burmease: ကရင်), an ethnolinguistic group of Sino-Tibetan language–speaking peoples.
The Karen people work in the fields in the daytime, so there is almost no one in the village, just a mother pig and her piglets.
A blacksmith family of three is left in the village; they still use traditional methods to make farm tools for the villagers.
The old woman who sharpened the knife is now 87 years old, but still looks very strong. Karen is a tribe that attaches great importance to reproduction, so the mother is often the head of the family.
All the houses in the village are wooden houses, only the church is made of bricks. Some of the Karen people believe in Christianity.
There is a nursery next to the church, since the adults are not here, all children in the village are sent here.
In addition to distributing stationery, Choumeizai also teaches the children to draw. Perhaps there are not many outsiders here, and when Choumeizai leaves, the children look quite sad.
