Xiaochengcun (Chinese: 小程村) is located in Yanchuan (延川), a county in the northeast of Shaanxi (陝西) Province, China. Beside the splendid scenery, Xiaochengcun also preserves the art of traditional paper cutting.
A granny aged around 60 living in a yaodong (窰洞; literally meaning ‘house cave’) is deemed as the master of traditional paper cutting, the whole cave is decorated by her beautiful artworks.
Papercuts always symbolize luck and happiness, so the paper-cutting artworks are used on festivals like Spring Festival and are usually made of red paper as red is associated with festivities and happiness in Chinese culture.
The artworks of the granny are quite expensive, but even though you won’t buy, you can still make friends with her and enjoy the peanut she cooks.
