Xingcheng (Chinese: 興城) is located at the the southwest of Huludao (葫蘆島), Liaoning (遼寧) province, China. The city of Xingcheng was founded in the third year of the Ming Dynasty (1428) and was rebuilt in the Qing (清) Dynasty.
The city of Xingcheng is a square, with a wall of around 8 meters and a circumference of 3,200 meters.
The center of the city has a bell tower built in 1454, from the tower you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city.
Xingcheng is deemed as one of the four ancient city pools that have been preserved in China so far, the other threes are: Xian (西安), the ancient city of Jingzhou (荊州) and Pingyao (平遙).
The barbicans in Xingcheng are still well preserved. The Chinese name of barbican is Wengcheng (甕城, Literally called ‘jar walls’), it is a fortified outpost or gateway, such as at an outer defense perimeter of a city or castle.
The former name of Xingcheng was Ningyuan (寧遠), in the Ming dynasty, Ningyuan was the frontier of the frontier, a general of Ming dynasty Yuan Chonghuan (袁崇煥) was stationed here.
Unfortunately, Xingcheng has become quite touristy, loud music and tacky decorations are everywhere, totally scrap the original nostalgic atmosphere.
