Cishan Old Street(Chinese: 旗山老街) is located in Cishan District (旗山區), Kaohsiung (高雄), Taiwan. Since Cishan is located in a place with convenient transportation and rich agricultural products, it has been prosperous since the Qing (清) Dynasty.
Cishan Old Street was called Fanshuliao (蕃薯寮) or called Hondori (本通), it was built in the Japanese Colonial Period.
Even though it bears the name of "Old Street", since there are too many modern buildings, Cishan Old Street doesn’t look so old.
The street stretches out from the Cishan Railway Station (旗山車站), some of the buildings on the street are built of stones and red bricks in Baroque architecture featuring the round stone arches.
Cishan Station was originally built by the Japanese government in Taiwan in 1912 to transport sugar cane, and people. The railway was decommissioned in 1978 with only the station buildings left intact.
Cishan used to be a distribution center for bananas and sugarcane, so there are many shops selling various desserts made by bananas.
Banana is not Choumeizai’s favorite, but the banana ice cream and banana egg roll here are really cheap and good, suitable for souvenirs.
