Matisi Grottoes (Chinese: 馬蹄寺石窟) is located in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County (肅南裕固族自治縣), Zhangye (張掖), Gansu (甘肅) Province, China. Unfortunately, Matisi Grottoes were devastated during the Cultural Revolution.
Almost all old statues have totally been destroyed, the statues we see nowadays are newly modeled.
Some of the shrines have become the home of pigeons, the pigeons make creepy echoes, sounds like mockery.
The first cave of Matisi Grottoes was dug around the 4th century, which was over 1,600 years ago.
Thousands Buddha Grottoes (千佛洞) are the only Chinese Buddhism grottoes in Matisi Grottoes, almost no relic is left.
There is only one Buddha statue which was built in the Tang (唐) Dynasty (618-907), looks merciful but lonely.
