Osu Kannon (大須観音) is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon Sect (真言宗) located in central Nagoya (名古屋), Japan. There is a shopping area named Osu Shopping District next to Osu Kannon, formed by several streets around the temple.
Those streets are: Osukannon Street (大須観音通),Bansyoji Street (万松寺通), Nioumon Street (仁王門通)、Higashi Nioumon Street (東仁王門通), Osu Hon Dori Street (大須本通), Monzen-cho Street (門前町道), Akamon Street (赤門通) and Shintenchi Street (新天地通).
There is a canopy in the shopping area, so you can still go shopping even if it rains.
Most of the shops in Osu Shopping District are small shops, only a few are chain stores.
There are many restaurants in the shopping area, serving Nagoya's famous dish: Hitsumabushi (ひつまぶし).
Hitsumabushi is a traditional Nagoya's dish of white rice topped with grilled eel. It is usually served in a wooden bowl and a customer scoops out a quarter of the eel and rice into the empty bowl and eats four times.
In each bowl, you can enjoy it in different ways with toppings and soup, which is also served as well. Most of the hitsumabushi restaurants recommend that customers eat it in these four ways.
