Shanhaiguan (Chinese: 山海關) or Shanhai Pass, is located in Qinhuangdao (秦皇島), Hebei (河北) province, right between the Yan Mountains (燕山) and the Liaodong Bay (遼東灣) coast. Shanhaiguan was listed as part of the Great Wall as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1987.
Shanhaiguan is one of the major passes in the Great Wall of China and the easternmost stronghold along the Ming Great Wall.
Shanhaiguan is the starting point of the eastern end of the Great Wall, and is the first barrier for guarding the frontier, therefore it is called the ‘First Pass Under Heaven’ (天下第一關).
The village around Shanhaiguan still remains in its old way, simple and adorned, a good place to embrace the nostalgic atmosphere.
The villagers here are very outspoken, they will express their grudge towards the government through writing.
