High Island (Chinese: 糧船灣) is a former island in the southeast of Sai Kung Peninsula, Hong Kong. The island is now connected to the peninsula and renowned for its natural beauty, offering beautiful vistas of the reservoir and the surrounding verdant hills, as well as magnificent hexagonal volcanic rock columns.
Po Pin Chau (破邊州) is a stack island outside East Dam of High Island Reservoir. It used to be part of Fa Shan, but years of wave impact and erosion separated them, the most spectacular view of Po Pin Chau is the hexagonal columns.
Kim Chu Wan (撿豬灣) is located at the eastern coast of High Island, it is a shingle beach not too far from the East Dam of High Island Reservoir, you can have a closer look to the splendid hexagonal columnar rock formations.
Thousands Rock Columns (萬柱海岸) , also known as Fa Shan's Rock Columns, is located at the southeastern coast of High Island, you can overlook the splendid hexagonal columnar rock formations from the top of a cape.
Pak Lap Wan (白腊灣) is a beautiful sandy beach, if you want to enjoy its serenity, it is better to visit there on weekdays since there are so many visitors on Saturday and Sunday.
Pak Lap Tsai (白腊仔) also named Seven Layers Beach (七重石灘), is a pebble stone beach located at the south of High Island, most of the stones on the beach are smooth and rounded as eggs due to the washing and rubbing of the sea water.
The geological spectacles of High Island are products of devastating volcanic eruptions about 140 million years ago.
There is no formal mountain trail on High Island, if you want to visit the above scenic spots, it would be better to come here with experienced hikers.
