Sanmachi (Japanese: 三町) is a traditional buildings preservation district in in the city of Takayama (高山), Gifu (岐阜), Japan. Sanmachi has long been the place where common people lived and traded and where merchants gathered.
About 300 years ago, daimyo and county officials set up their residences in the Sanmachi area. The buildings from the late Edo (江戶) period to the Meiji (明治) period are still well preserved, which attracts many tourists to visit here.
There are many kinds of shops, such as homestays, wine cellars, restaurants, cafes and grocery stores in Sanmachi.
Sanmachi is an area of about 150 meters east-west and about 420 meters north-south across Kamisannomachi (上三之町), Kamininomachi (上二之町), Kamininomachi (上一之町), Kataharacho (片原町), and Shinmeicho 4-chome (神明町4丁目).
Hida beef is a Takayama specialty, and visitors can enjoy various beef dishes such as beef sashimi and beef buns in Sanmachi.
Besides food, the traditional Japanese handicrafts sold in Sancho are also not to be missed. Although the handicraft is quite expensive, all are in good quality and made in Japan.
Also, when visiting Takayama City, don't forget to take a photo with the two patron saints of Takayama. Of the two guardian deities, the one with long legs is called "High" (高), and the one with long arms is called "Mountain" (山).
