Sandakan is on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia. Sandakan was nicknamed Little Hong Kong due to a strong presence of ethnic Chinese migration from Hong Kong (mainly Cantonese and Hakka).
As Sandakan had also been dominated by the Hakka and Cantonese Chinese, Hakka and Cantonese widely spoken, while Mandarin is the standardized spoken form of the Chinese language used in the business and education sectors.
As a Hongkonger, Choumeizai finds that the old streets in Sandakan are more interesting than the other ‘scenic spots’, which arouse the childhood memory.
Hong Kong is not ‘Hong Kong’ any more, but Sandakan still preserves the appearance of Hong Kong in the 60’s and 70’s, it should be named ‘Old Hong Kong’.
