Kashiya Yokocho (Japanese: 菓子屋横丁) is a shopping street in Kawagoe (川越) City, Saitama (琦玉) Prefecture, Japan. Confectionery stores including penny candy stores flank both sides of the street, a place which can arouse your memory of childhood.
The origin of Kashiya Yokocho dates back to 1796, when Tozaemon Suzuki (鈴木藤左衛門) started to produce simple candies in the present location of Kashiya Yokocho. Later, the number of stores increased by sharing goodwill.
After the Great Kanto Earthquake, this street manufactured and shipped Edo style candies instead of devastated Tokyo. In the early Showa (昭和) Era, there used to be more than 70 stores.
At present, some 20 stores keep making candies in Kashiya Yokocho according to the traditional manufacturing method.
Although Choumeizai doesn’t like candy, he still buys some souvenirs due to the nostalgic atmosphere of this little stone-paved street.
