Námafjall Geothermal Area is located in Northeast Iceland, on the east side of Lake Mývatn. Námafjall is part of Hverir, a tephra cone or tuff ring volcano in northern Iceland. Hverir erupted in 2500 BP, the crater is approximately 1 km in diameter.
In this area, you will see smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots everywhere, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours.
Sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg, which is strong and pungent.
Námaskarð earns its notoriety chiefly because of its sulphurous mud springs called solfataras and steam springs called fumaroles.
Námaskarð has two smoke vents with slightly lower temperatures. Visitors can feel the water vapor sprayed from the ground up close, which is exciting and interesting.
Every time the water vapour spews out, there is a loud roar-like noise from the ground, which make Choumeizai believes that the earth is alive.
