Mǔdān (Chinese: 牡丹) is the common name of a kind of Paeony grown in China, which have been cultivated for millennia in China for its ornamental value. Mudan is highly revered in Chinese culture, and Luoyang (Chinese: 洛陽) has long been famous for its beautiful peonies.
Luoyang is located in Henan (河南) of China, it is renowned as being ‘the city of peonies’. A poem states that ’only the peony is really a national beauty with its bloom shocking the capital’ (洛陽牡丹真國色,花開時節動京城).
Each year from mid-April to mid-May, the peonies in Luoyang are in full bloom, Luoyang Peony Festival is very popular among Chinese tourists and peony enthusiasts the world over.
The park is awash with colorful peonies, most of them have poetic and romantic names. In addition, there are various folk performances staged in the park.
