Meknes (Berber languages: ⴰⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ) is one of the four Imperial cities of Morocco, located in northern central Morocco. Lahdim Square (Arabian: ساحة الهديم) is a large esplanade, located between the old town and the imperial part of the city, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Meknes.
Lahdim literally means ‘demolition’ in Arabian, since the place was a slum area in the 8th century, then Sultan Moulay Isma'il ( مولاي إسماعيل بن الشريف) demolished the slum area and built a square during his reign in the 17th century.
Meknes became the capital of Morocco under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672–1727), he created a massive imperial palace complex and endowed the city with extensive fortifications and monumental gates.
Lahdim Square served as a space to celebrate parties and organize military demonstrations, it was also used for religious, cultural, and political gatherings.
Nowadays, Lahdim Square has become a big market filled with hawkers, animal trainers and buskers, creating an exotic atmosphere.
The hawkers in Lahdim Square are very aggressive, they keep speaking Japanese to Choumeizai, Choumeizai takes several photos and goes away.
