Kongtong Mountains (Chinese: 崆峒山) is located in Pingliang (平涼) City, Gansu (甘肅) Province, China. Kongtong Mountains is the holy mountain of Taoismis, which is noted for its marvelous natural scenery and exquisite man made landscapes.
It is said that Taoism temples were being built on Kongtong Mountains as early as in the Wei (220-265 AD) and Jin (265-420 AD) Dynasties.
The legendary Chinese emperor and the father of Chinese culture, Huangdi (黃帝), had visited Kongtong Mountains to consult the immortal Guang Chengzi (廣城子) on how to manage the country and maintain good health.
Later on, the King of the Western Zhou (西周) Dynasty (11th century BC-771 BC), the Emperor of the Qin (秦) Dynasty (221-207 BC) and the Emperor of the Western Han (西漢) Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD), had also visited the Kongtong Mountains, which made Kongtong Mountains more famous.
The scenic area of Kongtong Mountains can be divided into two parts: the Taoist area and the Buddhist area, while the Taoist area is more beautiful.
Kongtong Mountains is a branch of Liupan Mountains (六盤山). Though located in the western plateau area, the mountain is endowed with the characteristics of both the magnificence of northern mountains and the beauty of southern mountains.
Leizu (Chinese: 嫘祖) was a legendary Chinese empress and wife of the Huangdi, so there is also a temple for her.
Zhongling (中嶺) area has several restaurants and hotels. The restaurant here serves vegetarian dishes only since Kongtong Mountains is also the holy place of Buddhism. The dishes are delicious, just a bit pungent.
