Jeonju (Korean: 전주시) is the 16th largest city in South Korea and the capital of North Jeolla Province (전라북도). Jeonju is an important tourist center famous for historic buildings, Choumeizai will introduce Jeondong Cathedral (전동성당) and Jeonju Pungnammun Gate (전주 풍남문).
Jeondong Cathedral, also known as the Old Cathedral of Jeondong, is currently a parish church, belongs to the Diocese of Jeonju (전주 교구).
The cathedral building, of Roman-Byzantine style, was built between 1908 and 1914 by Victor Louis Poisnel (1855-1925).
The interior of the Jeondong Cathedral is clean and simple, which is different from the Catholic churches in Europe. Visitors are free to visit and take pictures, but keep quiet so as not to disturb the faithful.
There are many Catholics in South Korea, so Jeondong Cathedral is a popular place for local married couples to take photos.
Jeonju Pungnammun Gate was built during the Joseon dynasty in 1734 and is a designated Treasure. Pungnammun Gate was the southernmost gate among the four city gates of Jeonju.
The structure was severely damaged by fire in 1767, followed by the restoration of the gate tower afterwards. The gate was burnt down once again during the Imjin War and was restored to the gate that is seen today.
