Tomohon is a city in North Sulawesi Province (Indonesian: Sulawesi Utara), in central Indonesia. Tomohon is known for flower planting and vegetable agriculture, it also has another name called ‘Kota Bunga’ (city of flowers), but for Choumeizai, the most impressive is their traditional market.
The entrance of the market is quite crowded, a man is twined by a python and seems he wanna perform something, Choumeizai feels pity about the python, leaves before the show starts.
The vegetables and fruits here are quality but cheap, the papaya here is massive, but still sweet and juicy. If Choumeizai doesn’t need to take the flight, he will buy one back to Hong Kong.
Besides fruits, there are many weird vegetables in the market. Take this veggie with big leaves as an example, you need to peel it in small pieces before cooking.
These tiny spheres are not coconuts, they are made of palm-sugar, one of the specialties in Tomohon.
Since it has time, Choumeizai learns to cook the traditional dessert made of palm-sugar. Although Choumeizai doesn’t like deep fried food, but still finds it delicious due to the excellent quality of palm-sugar.
There are many Chinese living in Tomohon, so you can see bean curds, kippers and salted fish in the market.
The most stunning part of the market is their meat department, bloody and disgusting, the remnants on the meat table actually originates from a wild boar.
Pythons are protected species in many other countries but not here, they are quality meat on the meat rack.
These are not the corpses of rats, but the bats whose wings have been chopped, they look so horrible, how can you eat them?
Next to the exit of the market is a small park, there are many muscular cocks wandering around, obviously they are used for cock fighting, it seems animal rights has no place in Tomohon.
After viewing those horrors, you would better drink a good cup of coffee, the coffee beans in Tomohon are very famous and good for souvenirs, or do you wanna buy some chopped bats for your friends?
