Great Buddha Dordenma is located in Thimphu (Dzongkha: ཐིམ་ཕུ), the capital and largest city of Bhutan. The Buddha is made of bronze and gilded in gold, for celebrating the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck (འཇིགས་མེད་སེང་གེ་དབང་ཕྱུག).
The statue is 52 meters tall, which is one of the biggest Buddha statues in the world. The construction of the statue began in 2006 and finished in 2015.
The statue was sponsored by a Chinese corporation and a Singaporean businessman.The total cost of the entire project is well over 100 million US dollars.
The statue houses 100,000 8-inch-tall and 25,000 12-inch-tall small Buddha statues, all are made of bronze and gilded in gold, same as the Great Buddha Dordenma itself.
There are several statues of Bodhisattva around the Great Buddha Dordenma, which look more beautiful than the Buddha statues.
It is estimated that between two-thirds and three-quarters of the Bhutanese population follow Vajrayana Buddhism, which is also the state religion.
Great Buddha Dordenma sits atop a hill of Thimphu, overlooking the whole city of Thimphu, the view is excellent.
