Fuxi Temple (Chinese: 伏羲廟) is located in Tianshui (天水), Gansu (甘肅), China. The construction of Fuxi Temple began in Yuan (元) Dynasty (14th century), but most of the structures nowadays were built in Qing (清) Dynasty (18th century).
Fuxi Temple (伏羲) is a culture hero in Chinese legend and mythology, credited with creating humanity and the invention of hunting, fishing and domestication. Fuxi was said to have been born Tianshui, so a temple was built here to commemorate this ‘original human’.
There is a big rock next to the main entrance of Fuxi Temple, it was said such rock was the remnant left by Nüwa during the repair of the Pillar of Heaven. Nüwa is the mother goddess of Chinese mythology, the sister and wife of Fuxi, she is credited with creating humanity.
Fuxi Temple has many old cedars inside, looks so solemn.
Taiji Hall (太極殿) is the ‘bedroom’ of Fuxi and also the most important part of Fuxi Temple, so the decoration is the most exquisite.
It was said that Bagua (八卦) was also invented by Fuxi, so the ceiling of Taiji Hall was painted the 81 images of Bagua.
Fuxi was counted as the first of the Three Sovereigns (三皇) at the beginning of the Chinese dynastic period, so his attire was quite primitive, looked like a man from Stone Age.
