The Burma Railway (Thai: ทางรถไฟสายมรณะ), also known as the Death Railway, is a railway between Thailand, and Burma, it is said that more than 100,000 people died during the construction of this railway. Hellfire Pass (ช่องเขาขาด) is noted for the harsh conditions and heavy loss of life.
No train running on this stretch of the line, the railway has been turned to a hiking trail which is about 4km long.
The drilling holes are everywhere, and sometimes you can even see some broken drill bits. Even though metal cannot stand such harsh conditions, how about flesh and blood?
There is a small altar on the roadside, it is embraced by many Australia flags, an Australian friend on the tour says many Australians died here during wartime.
Besides flags, there are also many red paper poppies, poppies are symbols of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.
Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death: Sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative, and death because of the common blood-red color of the red poppy in particular.
