Dimmuborgir is located at the east of Mývatn in Iceland. Dimmuborgir Is composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel, such a dramatic structure is one of most popular natural tourist attractions of Iceland.
In Icelandic language, “dimmu” means “dark”, while “borgir” means “cities” or “castles”, so Dimmuborgir means “Dark castles”.
If you are lucky, visitors may meet the “descendants of giants” in the park, but of course, these so-called “descendants of giants” are all disguised by staff.
Dimmuborgir is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields, consisting of a massive, collapsed lava tube formed by a lava lake flowing in from a large eruption about 2300 years ago.
In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions. In Nordic Christian lore, it is also said that Dimmuborgir is the place where Satan landed when he was cast from the heavens.
There is a “giant's residence” in Dimmuborgir, which is also not real. The most interesting thing is that there is a calculator in the cave.
Dimmuborgir covers a vast area with many forks, and the surrounding rocks look similar. If you go the wrong way, it will take hours to find the exit.
There is a viewing platform on a slightly higher ground in the scenic spot, from which you can overlook the beautiful scenery around Dimmuborgir.
