Badi Mahal, also known as City Palace (सिटी पैलेस, उदयपुर), is a palace complex situated in the city of Udaipur (उदयपुर) in the Indian state of Rajasthan (राजस्थान). The palace has now been converted into a museum, and no one has lived here for a long time.
There are many interesting rooms in the harem, one of these rooms has mirrors on all sides. It is said that this is the place where the emperor have sex with his concubine.
The palace was built over a period of nearly 400 years, with contributions from several rulers of the Mewar (मेवाड़) dynasty.
There are many open-air atriums in the harem for the emperor and concubines to rest. There are balconies around the atrium, people standing on the balcony can enjoy the scenery around the palace, very clever design.
The walls of this atrium are inlaid with shells and glass, the whole atrium is shining with pleasing brilliance and gorgeousness when the sun shines.
The construction of City Palace began in 1553, started by Maharana Udai Singh II (उदयसिंह द्वितीय). The Maharanas lived and administered their kingdom from this palace, thereby making the palace complex an important historic landmark.
There is an exhibition hall near the exit, showcasing some furniture, furnishings and jewelry used by former kings.
The most special among them is this pair of chess played by the old kings. The ‘king’ and ‘queen’ are both riding on elephants, very Indian.
