Tung Chung Fort (Chinese: 東涌寨城) is a fort located near Ha Ling Pei (下嶺皮), Tung Chung (東涌), Lantau Island (大嶼山), Hong Kong. Tung Chung Fort is well preserved, there are many Qing (清) Dynasty cannons on the walls, looks very imposing.
The area of Tung Chung Fort is about 4,500 square meters. The city wall is made of granite and has three arched city gates.
There are 6 cannons on the north wall, 4 on the east wall, and 2 on the west wall, all of which are placed on granite and cement bases.
Tung Chung Fort was built during the Daoguang (道光) period of the Qing Dynasty (1820-1850), mainly to prevent the opium trade and pirate aggression.
The fort was garrisoned to defend the coast from pirates until the lease of New Territories to Britain in 1898, then it was abandoned. During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the fort.
Tung Chung Fort went through several transformations. It served as a police station and then as Wa Ying College (華英中學), the base for the Rural Committee Office and the Tung Chung Public School (東涌公立學校). The school has been abandoned since it was closed in 2003.
To get to Tung Chung Fort, you can walk for about 20 minutes from Tung Chung MTR Station, or take bus No. 3M and get off at Ha Ling Pei Station.
