Akureyri Botanical Garden (Icelandic: Lystigarður Akureyrar) is located in the southern part of the city of Akureyri in Northern Iceland, 50 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. Akureyri Botanical Garden is one of the popular tourist attractions of Iceland, remarkable for its extreme location.
The garden is admission free, but it is only accessible in summer, from June 1st to September 31st.
Akureyri Botanical Garden now covers 3.6 hectares, and is home to over 7,000 species of plant, but the vast majority are alien to Iceland, only around 400 are native.
The garden preserves a small area for the native plants of Iceland, their vivid colors reveal the perseverance of these Icelandic indigenous residents.
Akureyri Botanical Garden was established in 1957, within a city park that had been created by local women in 1912.
Although the garden is admission free, you need to pay if you want to use the toilet inside, quite fair.
