Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve is located in the northern part of Sulawesi island of Indonesia, the reserve covers an area of 8,700 hectares and includes three mountains, it is one of the main habitats of Celebes crested macaque.
Celebes crested macaque (Macaca nigra), also known as the crested black macaque, is a monkey that lives in the Tangkoko reserve as well as on smaller neighboring islands.
There are about 5,500 Celebes crested macaques remain on Sulawesi island, they are categorized as ‘threatened species’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Locally known as yaki or wolai, both the skin and face of Celebes crested macaque are entirely black. The long muzzle with high cheeks and the long hair tuft at the top of the head are their remarkable features.
Celebes crested macaque has an apelike appearance due to its almost non-visible tail. Its life expectancy is estimated at approximately 20 years in the wild.
Celebes crested macaque has long been hunted as a pest or bushmeat by locals. Clearing the rain forests further threatens its habitat and survival.
