Nigatsudo (Japanese: 二月堂, literally meaning the hall of the second month) is one of the important structures of Tōdai-ji (東大寺), a temple in Nara, Japan. Nigatsudo was in 752 and the current structure of Nigatsu-do was completed in 1669.
There is a little tea house in Nigatsudo, you can take some rest and enjoy the tea for free.
A ceremony named ‘Omizutori (お水取り)’ takes place in Nigatsudo every year, which means taking sacred water, such traditional ceremony has been lasting for over 1,200 years.
Nigatsudo is located to the east of the Great Buddha Hall, on the hillside of Mount Wakakusa (若草山). In 1944, Nigatsudo was chosen by Japan as one of the most important cultural aspects of the country.
The current main hall of Nigatsu-dō is a designated National Treasure, if you have some time after visiting the Great Buddha Hall, drop some time to visit here.
There are many trees around the hillside of Mount Wakakusa, in autumn the trees will turn to different colors, don’t miss it after visiting Nigatsudo.
