Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay in California, United States, which offers picturesque views of the San Francisco skyline. Angel Island is not far from Alcatraz Island, you can put two islands in one itinerary.
It takes around half an hour from Alcatraz Island to Angel Island, The nature of angel Island is beautiful, many visitors come here to picnic or do cycling.
Angel Island is quite big, you can join a local vehicle tour which takes around one hour.
Angel Island was a quarry in the past, some stone crushers are still preserved on the island. The geology of Angel Island is quite unique, most of the rocks are green in color.
It is quite interesting that most of the plantations on Angel Island are non-native and introduced from Southern Europe, same as the human immigrants, they are also Americans.
There are several lookouts on Angel Island, you can see San Francisco and the islands in San Francisco Bay from afar, but the scenery is not as good as Choumeizai’s expectation.
Angel Island has been the home of a military installation and Immigration station, the Angel Island Immigration Station on the northeast corner of the island, where officials detained, inspected, and examined approximately one million immigrants from over 80 countries, has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Amongst these immigrants, over 170,000 were from China, they encountered discrimination during detention, and wrote poems to express their grievances. Since most of the poems were written by Guangdong’s immigrants, it is rhymed if you recite those poems in Cantonese, Choumeizai feels so intimate.
