Sagada is located in Mountain Province, Philippines. Sagada is famous for its limestone caves. There are over 60 caves discovered underneath the town of Sagada. Of all of these underworlds, Sumaguing Cave has the biggest chamber, earning its nickname ‘The Big Cave’.
There is no lighting equipment in Sumaguing Cave, so the local guide will prepare a kerosene lamp for lighting.
Many bats are hanging on the top of the cave, and their excrement produces a strong stench.
Limestone caves are often adorned with calcium carbonate formations produced through slow precipitation. These include flowstones, stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, soda straws, calcite rafts and columns.
There is an underground river in Sumaguing Cave, so the ground is very slippery, and you can only walk with bare feet.
Inside the cave there are countless rock formations slowly shaped by nature over thousands of years. These rock formations mimic familiar shapes such as turtle, elephant and penis.
Some places are submerged under water, since it is groundwater, the water temperature is close to freezing point.
Sumaguing Cave is unfathomable, after going in for more than an hour, Choumeizai has only explored a small part of the cave.
