Lake Pukaki is located in the central South Island of New Zealand, occupying 169 square kilometers of a valley dammed by glacial debris. The lake is around 500 meters above sea level, receives its water from melting glaciers east of the Southern Alps.
Lake Pukaki is 8 kilometers wide and 15 kilometers long, which is the largest of three roughly parallel alpine lakes running in Mackenzie Basin.
There are several lookouts along Lake Pukaki, the one named Peter’s Lookout doesn’t have many people, but you can still enjoy the panoramic view of the lake.
The water of Lake Pukaki is extremely clean and clear, no matter how gloomy the sky is, the lake is still blue as sapphire.
Lake Pukaki is now part of the Waitaki hydro electric scheme, ‘Pukaki’ in Maori means ‘bunched-up water’.
Lake Pukaki is surrounded by the snow mountains of the Southern Alps, blue and white are always the perfect match.
