Ma Wan Chung Village (Chinese: 馬灣涌村) is located in Tung Chung (東涌), Lantau Island (大嶼山), Hong Kong. Ma Wan Chung Village has been a settlement since 618 to 960 AD and subsequently developed into a fishing village, where rice and fish were in abundance.
Although Tung Chung has developed rapidly in recent years with many public housing estates, Ma Wan Chung Village still retains many old buildings and small streets, which are quite like the fishing village of the past.
There are some shacks in the offshore part of Ma Wan Chung Village. The shacks are mainly constructed of wood and fixed on the water surface with wooden poles, so that fishing boats can be easily parked beside them.
There is a long bridge between Ma Wan Chung Village and Ma Wan Chung Pier (馬灣涌碼頭). The long bridge is lined with mangroves, and creatures such as fiddler crabs and mudskippers can be seen.
Ma Wan Chung Pier, also known as Tung Chung Public Pier (東涌公眾碼頭) or Tung Chung Old Pier (東涌舊碼頭), is adjacent to Ma Wan Chung Village and is a famous sunset viewing spot in Hong Kong.
But even if it is not evening, the sea view of Ma Wan Chung Pier is still very beautiful.
To get to Ma Wan Chung Village, you can walk for about 15 minutes from Tung Chung MTR Station, or take public transport to Yat Tung Estate (逸東邨).
