The main population of Maolin is Rukai (\u9b6f\u51f1\u65cf) people. Duona Lane (\u591a\u7d0d\u91cc) reserves the most complete Rukai culture, the best place to learn about Rukai culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1235-3.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1236.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rukai are one of the indigenous people of Taiwan, they consist of six communities residing in southern Taiwan, each of which has its own dialect of the Rukai language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1201.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1214.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although small, Duona Lane is quite modern, with sound water and electricity facilities, schools, police and fire stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1211-3.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1200.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rukai were formerly called Tsarisen or Tsalisen, which means \u2018people living in the mountains\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1209.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1213.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many slate houses preserved in Duona Lane. The slate houses are traditional houses built with slates by the aborigines Rukai, Paiwan (\u6392\u7063\u65cf), Bunun (\u5e03\u8fb2\u65cf) and Atayal (\u6cf0\u96c5\u65cf) people in Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1205.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1205-4.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Slate houses generally use slate or shale as building materials, and the roof and exterior walls are like scales, which are very distinctive.  Some of the slate houses have been converted into homestays or cafes to receive tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1206-4.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/taiwan_2013\/20130326-1203-2.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to legend, the Rukai people have a terrible custom.
