Constructed in 1914 and opened in 1923, Otaru Canal (\u5c0f\u6a3d\u904b\u6cb3) was a central part of the city's busy port in the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-40-37.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-44-40.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Otaru faces Ishikari Bay (\u77f3\u72e9\u6e7e) and the Sea of Japan, and has long served as the main port of the bay. With its many historical buildings, Otaru is a popular tourist destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-42-29.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-47-23.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The canal became obsolete when modern dock facilities allowed for direct unloading of larger vessels. Thanks to a citizens' movement, a part of the canal was beautifully restored in the 1980s instead of being landfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-50-32.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-46-09.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some reliefs on the banks of the Otaru Canal , depicting the history of the canal, while the warehouses along the canal have been transformed into museums, shops and restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-57-07.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2016\/20160119-14-58-05.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal Plaza (\u904b\u6cb3\u30d7\u30e9\u30b6) is a visitor center. This visitor center has plenty of acilities, including information desks, exhibition halls, shops and restrooms.
