Shirakawago is well known for its cluster of farmhouses, constructed in the architectural style known as Gasso-zukuri (\u5408\u638c\u9020\u308a).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-12-36-58.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-24-47.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ogimachi (\u837b\u753a) is the largest village and main attraction of Shirakawa-go, the village is home to several dozen well preserved Gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-31-29.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-29-06.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gasso-zukuri, literally means house prayer-hands construction style, is characterized by a steeply slanting thatched roof, resembling two hands joined in prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-27-55.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-12-15-09.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the Gassho-zukuri farmhouses have been revamped as shops and restaurants, serving snacks such as Hokkaido ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-12-12-00.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-58-44.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the farmlands in Ogimachi have long been abandoned, some are decorated with colorful scarecrows, which look funny but sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-12-09-54.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-12-10-37.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The design of Gasso-zukuri is exceptionally strong, which allows the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snowfalls in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-12-12-40.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-32-38.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine (\u767d\u5ddd\u516b\u5e61\u795e\u793e) is a small shrine in the deepest part of the Shirakawago and is where the Doburoku Festival is held in the middle of October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-53-07.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2015a\/20151018-11-51-07.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect the tradition, each Gassho-zukuri farmhouse has a fire hydrant next to it.
