{"id":4754,"date":"2021-10-18T09:50:02","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T01:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/info.thetravel.me\/?p=4754"},"modified":"2021-10-18T09:59:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T01:59:26","slug":"on-the-train-of-death-railway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/info.thetravel.me\/en\/on-the-train-of-death-railway\/","title":{"rendered":"On the train of Death Railway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Burma Railway (Thai: \u0e17\u0e32\u0e07\u0e23\u0e16\u0e44\u0e1f\u0e2a\u0e32\u0e22\u0e21\u0e23\u0e13\u0e30), also known as the Death Railway, is a railway between Ban Pong, Thailand and Thanbyuzayat, Burma, built by prisoners of war of the Japanese from 1940\u20131944 to supply troops and weapons in the Burma campaign of World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7029.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7048.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Thai portion of the railway continues to exist, with three trains crossing the original bridge twice daily bound from Bangkok to the current terminus at Nam Tok (\u0e19\u0e49\u0e33\u0e15\u0e01).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7057.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7070.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the railway's construction, around 90,000 Southeast Asian civilian forced laborers died, along with more than 12,000 Allied prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7127.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7167.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This railway is mainly built for tourists, so the train cabins are not crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7077.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7253.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the Burmese portion of the Burma Railway fell into disrepair decades ago and has not seen service after World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7186.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/bangkok_2011\/20110607-7215.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In early 1942, Japanese forces invaded Burma and seized control of the colony from the United Kingdom.
