The name of the temple comes from Mount Potalaka (\u88dc\u9640\u6d1b), it is said that the temple was founded by Ragy\u014d Sh\u014dnin (\u88f8\u5f62\u4e0a\u4eba), a monk from India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-52-46.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-49-09.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2004, Fudarakusan-ji was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range \uff08\u7d00\u4f0a\u5c71\u5730\u306e\u970a\u5834\u3068\u53c2\u8a63\u9053).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-53-41.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-52-19.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only tourist here is Choumeizai, the atmosphere is peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-49-24.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-50-11.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For over a millennium until the late 19th century, once the the monks turned 60 years old, they would go out to sea on a small boat in a practice known as \u2018Fudaraku T\u014dkai\u2019 (\u88dc\u9640\u6d1b\u6e21\u6d77), which means crossing the sea to Mount Potalaka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-51-32.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-51-45.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mount Potalaka, literally means \u2018Brilliance\u2019, is the mythical dwelling of the Buddhist bodhisattva Avalokite\u015bvara, said to exist in the seas south of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-47-39.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-02-09-53-29.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Buddhism, Avalokite\u015bvara is a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas.
