The center of the town is on a narrow isthmus named Shionomisaki (\u6f6e\u5cac), which has the distinction of being the southernmost point of Japan's main island, Honshu (\u672c\u5dde).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-13-32-33.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-14-07-00.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shionomisaki Lighthouse (\u6f6e\u5cac\u706f\u53f0) is a lighthouse sitting on the top of Shionomisaki, surrounded on both sides by the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-13-57-35.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-14-11-30.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighthouse was designed by a Scottish named Richard Henry Brunton, who was hired by the government of Japan during the Meiji (\u660e\u6cbb) period to help construct lighthouses to make Japan safe for foreign ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-14-17-12.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-14-13-55.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors are allowed to climb to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic view of the coastline of Shionomisaki and the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-14-14-18.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014a\/2014-12-01-14-19-04.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction of Shionomisaki Lighthouse was completed in 1870 and first lit in 1873.
