With a history of 1,600 years, Tiantishan Grottoes are amongst the earliest grottoes excavated in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-12-27-48.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-29-04.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1958, due to the construction of the Huangyanghe Reservoir (\u9ec3\u7f8a\u6cb3\u6c34\u5eab) near the Tiantishan Grottoes, most of the statues and murals were relocated to museum for preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"487\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-46-53.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-57-04.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1992, a dam was built to separate the water from the Big Buddha Cave (\u5927\u4f5b\u7a9f), which had been soaked in the water for over 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-57-25.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-58-47.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Excavated from the time of the Northern Liang (\u5317\u6dbc; 412\u2013439), carving, decoration and subsequent modification of the caves continued through the Northern Wei (\u5317\u9b4f) and Tang (\u5510) to the Qing (\u6e05) dynasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-58-33.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-07-11-59-52.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In ancient times, Wuwei was called Liangzhou (\u6dbc\u5dde) and is the eastern terminus of the Hexi Corridor (\u6cb3\u897f\u8d70\u5eca).
