The temple has had several names over the centuries, its present name of \u2018Dafo\u2019 (\u5927\u4f5b) means \u2018Great Buddha\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-14-44-20.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-15-41-39.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The temple was built around the beginning of the 12th century, during the Western Xia (\u897f\u590f; 1038\u20131227) period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-15-36-18.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-14-46-07.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dafo Temple is notable for its gigantic reclining Buddha statue made around 1100 during the Western Xia period, which is thirty-five metres long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-15-04-49.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-15-05-25.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not allowed to take photos inside the temple, so Choumeizai can only show you guys the beautiful brick carvings outside the temples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-14-47-56.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-14-48-12.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a small museum in Dafo Temple, showcasing some precious Buddhist relics found in Zhangye area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-15-06-51.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-06-15-07-32.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1028, the Tangut people took over Zhangye and controlled the entirety of the Hexi Corridor (\u6cb3\u897f\u8d70\u5eca).
