The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-03-09-13-19.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-03-09-41-26.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>735 caves currently exist in Mogao, the best-known ones are the 487 caves located in the southern section of the cliff which are places of pilgrimage and worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-03-09-14-24.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-03-09-13-36.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mogao Caves were first dug out in AD 366 as places of Buddhist meditation and worship, some of the caves were elaborately painted, serving as visual representations of the quest for enlightenment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-03-09-13-10.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/gansu_14\/2014-06-03-09-21-29.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Tang (\u5510) Dynasty, Dunhuang became the main hub of commerce of the Silk Road and a major religious centre.
