The city prospered as a commercial and transshipment center, It is known locally as \u2018Little Edo\u2019 (\u5c0f\u6c5f\u6238) after the old name for Tokyo, due to its many historic buildings built in the Edo period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-14-05-28.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-37-52.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Edo period (\u6c5f\u6238\u6642\u4ee3) or Tokugawa period (\u5fb3\u5ddd\u6642\u4ee3) is between 1603 and 1867 in the history of Japan, when Japan was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate and the country's 300 regional feudal lords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-33-44.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-36-06.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kawagoe Castle (\u5ddd\u8d8a\u57ce) is a flatland Japanese castle, it is the closest castle to Tokyo to be accessible to visitors, as Edo castle is now the Imperial palace, and largely inaccessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-40-02.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-45-30.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of the castle was dismantled during \nThe Meiji (\u660e\u6cbb) era between 1868 and 1912, today only a mound on which a tower and the primary hall (\u672c\u4e38\u5fa1\u6bbf) still remain on the original site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-40-57.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-54-25.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Edo period, Kawagoe Castle was the headquarters of the Kawagoe Domain under the Tokugawa shogunate, which had the largest kokudaka (productivity) in the Kant\u014d (\u95a2\u6771) region outside of the control of the Tokugawa clan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-51-13.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/japan_2014\/2014-02-18-13-54-43.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kawagoe was an important commercial town supplying resources to Edo (\u6c5f\u6236, present day Tokyo).
