The centre is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which covers an area of 4,294 hectare, much of which is virgin rainforest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-083925.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-105254.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre opened in 1964 as the first official orangutan rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or kept as pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-094409.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-100216.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans are great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia, they have proportionally long arms and short legs and their hair is reddish-brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-100221.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-100341.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Orangutans are among the most intelligent primates, the name \u2018orangutan\u2019 is derived from the Malay words orang, meaning \u2018person\u2019, and hutan, meaning \u2018forest\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-100314.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-100433.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the fruit season, it is not easy to see orangutans in the park, you need to \u2018invite\u2019 them by a basket of fresh fruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-100517.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-101558.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All orangutan species are considered critically endangered. Threats to wild orangutan populations include poaching, habitat destruction because of palm oil cultivation, and the illegal pet trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-103923.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/sabah_2012\/0113-103621.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready.
