Baphuon was built in the mid-11th century as the state temple of Udayadityavarman II (\u17a7\u1791\u17d0\u1799\u17b6\u1791\u17b7\u178f\u17d2\u1799\u179c\u179a\u17d2\u1798\u17d0\u1793\u1791\u17b8\u17e2) dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151335.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151332.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Baphuon measures 120 metres east-west by 100 metres north-south at its base and stands 34 meters tall. The temple used to have a bronze tower on top but had gone long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151813.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151408.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The causeway of Baphuon is supported by lingam (Sanskrit: \u0932\u093f\u0919\u094d\u0917 literally meaning \u2018sign, symbol or mark\u2019), an abstract or aniconic representation of the Hindu deity Shiva in Shaivism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151443.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151713.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the late 15th century, the Baphuon was converted to a Buddhist temple. A 9 meter tall by 70 meter long statue of a reclining Buddha was built on the west side's second level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-151823.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/cambodia_2011\/0917-152129.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Baphuon was built on land filled with sand, and due to its immense size the site was unstable throughout its history.
