The name Sigiriya refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-10-04.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-37-09.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the main entrance of the palace stand two massive \u2018Lion pawns\u2019, which are the best preserved parts of the palace. The original wooden plank walkway has long gone and been replaced by steel structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-36-45.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-40-05.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-42-34.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-40-39.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, this site was selected by King Kashyapa (\u0db4\u0dc5\u0db8\u0dd4\u0dc0\u0db1 \u0d9a\u0dcf\u0dc1\u0dca\u200d\u0dba\u0db4 \u0dbb\u0da2; 477-495 CE) for his new capital. He acquired the throne by overthrowing his father, King Dhatusena (\u0db0\u0dcf\u0dad\u0dd4\u0dc3\u0dda\u0db1 \u0dbb\u0da2), so he built his palace on the top of this rock to avoid the revenge from his brother, the rightful heir to the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-43-42.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/srilanka_2015\/2015-01-11-19-46-28.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The area around Sigiriya may have been inhabited since prehistoric times.
