They were mostly built between the 12th and the 20th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2009\/chiu%20051.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2009\/chiu%20045.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular or circular in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2008\/IMG_3772.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2008\/IMG_3758.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays, there are around 3000 tulous in China, some notable tulous such as Chuxi Tulou group (\u521d\u6eaa\u571f\u6a13\u7fa4), Zhenchenglou (\u632f\u6210\u6a13) and Zhenchenglou (\u632f\u6210\u6a13) have become popular tourist attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2008\/IMG_3896.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2008\/IMG_3897.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is generally believed that from the 12th century to 19th century, armed bandits plagued southern China. The people of southern Fujian first built strongholds on top of mountains as self defense. These early strongholds later evolved into Fujian Tulou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2008\/IMG_4094.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetravel.me\/images-webp\/fukien_2008\/IMG_3794.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The layout of Fujian tulou is an enclosure wall with living quarters around the peripheral and a common courtyard at the center.
